We pack our things and clean the campervan. Once more we go by bus into the city. There we find nice souvenirs and gifts made from wood in the Arts Centre. Right beside is the busy Dux de Lux. At first we have a beer outside, then we go into the restaurant where people are already queueing to place their orders. Like so often in New Zealand, you pay first and get a number which you put on your table. I think it's practical – you don't have to wait when you want to leave. Generally Kiwis don't make a lot of fuss about dining out. And even if the interior is classy you won't be out of place wearing jeans or trekking trousers.

Today, we like Christchurch even better. We go for a pint to Sammy's Jazz Review* at Bedford Row, and although it's early evening there are two jazz musicians playing. There's no one else besides us and the waiter and the atmosphere is relaxed. The guys are pleased when we say thanks for the music before we leave.
From here we stroll through the streets and reverse our hasty decision from yesterday. There's much to see in Christchurch – but for our taste it's far more interesting a little more out of the town centre.
